Attending Army Basic Training, a Hell Week at Fort Benning and PLDC. Qualifying with a M16 and being assigned a M249. 9/11 Lockdown at Fort Bliss. Deployment Orders. Vaccinations and Signing Last Will. Flight into Kuwait and drive to Al Jaber. First Scud Alarm. First shelter inside bunker. First purchase inside Kuwait City and swim in Kuwait Bay. First smoke from a hookah. Convoy with mounted machine gun atop an unarmored HMMWV into the former Tallil Air Base (Nasiriyah, Iraq). Sandstorms, water rations and full MOPP in Iraq. Sleeping on a cot atop a crate of grenades the first night. Burn pit and shitter details. Exploring the ancient ruins of Ur. Smoking a celebratory Cuban cigar.
